The property is an extensive mix of flower beds and wild sections linked by numerous paths and bridges. Many well established trees such as Ash, Beech, Lime, Maple, Sycamore, Birch, Field Maple, Crab Apple, Chestnut, Hazelnut, to name a few. The chalk stream is lined with a variety of Willow which are regularly pollarded. Wildlife includes deer, muntjac, fox, rabbits, hedgehogs and the occasional badger. The stream is home to wild ducks, trout, egrets, kingfisher and recently otters have been recorded. Rooks return in mass every year to nest in our very tall ash trees. Red kites can always be seen, the owls heard at night and a great variety of smaller birds are ever present. There are 12 springs on the property, three which run all year and the remainder which rise in winter and spring. The stream is totally spring fed and has its origin 500 metres away in the village of Letcombe Bassett. A footpath through the edge of the property links the villages of Letcombe Bassett and LetcombeRegis.
At one end of the sloping paddock is an orchard and at the other end a small vineyard. The vegetable garden and beehives provide fresh produce in summer. Gates at various points on the perimeter provide access to adjacent fields and footpaths.
Astrid has a passion for flowers and the variety and display is a joy to behold, from spring right through to late October. It is no surprise therefore that house and B&B accomodation always reflect this with freshly cut flowers everywhere.
Summer and autumn
There is a special beauty around here in the cold months. Clear air in the hills and a mist that hovers above the spring-fed brook. Snowdrops appear in abundance all over the property from January onwards. This is closely followed by widespread daffodils , bluebells and a host of other wildflowers. As the first blossoms emerge, the smell of wild garlic underfoot heralds in spring and the return of so much wildlife.
